Hello Fedora Design,
The time has come to make a new shirt for Flock 2014. This year, Flock is in Prague, Czech Republic. The shirt design for 2013 was very popular, people seemed to like the clean nature of it, as well as the fact that it incorporated aspects of the local area (the local bird).
We need a design for this year's Flock shirt. It needs to be a single color design to keep costs down. There is a general desire to avoid a black shirt, but the ultimate design belongs to the Design Team. Ideally, it will have a similar look and feel to the 2013 design without feeling like a copy. There is no "theme" for Flock, but it would be nice if it incorporated the local scene somehow and still felt like Fedora.
Shirt does not need to be gray like last year, but can be.
We need this as soon as possible. Feel free to make multiple proposals and let the Flock staff choose (or just send one). :)
Thanks in advance.

Something more modern than usual history, Dancing House could be a nice theme. Also metro station has unique design. http://media0.iplace.cz/images/media0:4bd1deeb12449.jpg/NAM.jpg Prague is known for many legends - http://www.myczechrepublic.com/prague/history/prague_legends.html with Golem as the main theme http://img.ahaonline.cz/img/18/new_article/1286532-img-cisaruv-pekar-v1.jpg?v=1

I really like it! But it seems like we may have troubles using Golem... Dan Horak just told me, that were some disputes regarding using Golem as a monster and daughter of the original author of movie's Golem sued many companies and won. I thought, it's the common look of Golem from legends (even one company who loosed the case defended this way) but judge ruled this way.
http://bit.ly/1kQkh6X (full article, translated to English using Google Translate)
I'm not sure changing the look to something far away from movie would help as the court ruled based on monster look, not similarity to the statue. Maybe we should take a look for a new idea :(.
Speaking of Golem, the legend is connected to the emperor Rudolf II. and his court painter was Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His paintings are very unique because he was using objects such as fruits and vegetables to compose them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Arcimboldo
That might be an unorthodox idea for a t-shirt.
Or maybe some combination of Fedora logo and Prague Astronomical Clock (one of the most famous sightseeing objects in Prague): http://www.prague.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Astronomical-Clock.jpg
Fedora logo as the inner circle and some connection to releases of Fedora.
Are there any Magical Prague stories that we might be able to use?
astronomical fedora clock? astronomical-fedora.png
Okay, here's a redesign of the Prague Astronomical Clock. :) The inner circle is the shape of the Fedora bubble here, with the Fedora logo in the center and the Flock conference name around the edging. The outer circle's edging could have the dates of the conference (and maybe should say Prague, Czech Republic around the lower right outer rim.)
A couple thoughts::
I don't know what position would be appropriate for the time the conference is being held. Does anybody know what the clock face looks like right now? (Should be closer to what it would look like in August than a random guess.) But the other issue is because of the shape of the Fedora logo, the inner circle really could only work on the right side of the outer circle.
We could make this more complex by adding statue designs around it like the real clock. It has apostles and skeletons and animals. Maybe we do pandas and anacondas and beefy miracles??? (Any other Fedora characters? :) ) Or maybe this makes it too complex.
This is a really heavy modification. I"m hoping with some of the detailing - like the metal rims around each of the circles and the arcs in the center of the larger circle - that it'll still read as a variation of the astronomical clock?? I know it's hard to tell in a rough sketch like this too.
Ohhh! Jiří, I love the idea of connecting it with releases of Fedora. I could put the date and location stuff along the outside (or along the inside of the outer rim) And put the Fedora release numbers up to 21 inside the outer rim??
Re: the Giuseppe Arcimboldo idea.... he didn't just use fruit. Here is one with chickens and birds:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Arcimboldo_Air_%28copy%29.jpg
What if we made a Fedora logo out of.... hot dogs....? Or Prague Castle? I know Prague Castle is overused, but I bet nobody has made Prague Castle out of hot dogs????

Even though we probably can't use this, I'd still like to provide feedback, since you've put so much work into it!
I love this one - IMO the best of the lot for the tshirt. Were you trying to make the golem sit on a boat?
This one could use improvement. The umm..(belt?) on it's body could be made to an "f" ;)

The last point is a bit of my concern as well.
But the idea is pretty - I was thinking, the Fedora bubble could be used as a pointer to where the clock is pointing, although we might have to remove the F inside in that case.
I was imagining a modern version of the clock - maybe the space between the August 6-9 and the bubble itself (currently filled with some kinda strokes) could be filled with the patterns from the Fedora.next logo idea pattern?
I really like this one too - but for the tshirt, probably the restriction on the number of colors might be a problem :/
I'll work on the logos tonight and try to.. de-clutter a lil bit ;)
You can find a description of how the astronomical clock works on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_astronomical_clock
If you look at a picture of the entire clock you can spot two windows above the rim. They open every hour and present the twelve Apostles as moving figures. I was thinking that we could use it for the figures of the last two release code names. That would also set Flock Prague in time, taking place after the F19 and F20 releases. On the other hand, I have no idea how to depict Heisenbug.
Composing a Fedora logo using buildings and objects from Prague could also look interesting. I don't know how it would work with sausages, though.
flock2k14 tshirt - kepler concept prague1.jpg
The image would be too large to fit in here, so I've just attached a concept.
So.. this one depicts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Kepler, looking through a telescope (I'm not sure if he used telescopes though). Out in the sky there's a depiction of the famous Kepler's second law of planetary motion. The sun is obviously the Fedora logo. The path of the planet itself (kinda like an oval) is used to generate the idea of the astronomical clock - this one uses Roman letterings, but from what I found out, the clock has special zodiac signs around it. The area inside the path could have a faint fill of the map of the world.. you know, to depict Fedorans from world over attend Flock.
To spice things up, Kepler can be made to wear Fedora branded accessories!
I was also thinking, one more idea is to ignore the Kepler and telescope, the oval + roman letterings is kinda simple but still nice for a tshirt front :)
I really like the idea of using the Prague astronomical clock. The idea of adding Kepler is not bad, but I think it makes the shirt design fairly "busy" and not in keeping with our overall design aesthetic. What do others think?
If we had to do figurines for each release:
1 Yarrow - A yarrow flower
2 Tettnang - Tettnang coat of arms figure (a black dog?)
3 Heidelberg - Heidelberg coat of arms figure (gold lion)
4 Stentz - D*
5 Bordeaux - bottle of wine
6 Zod - DNA strand
7 Moonshine - jug of moonshine
8 Werewolf - werewolf
9 Sulphur - pieces of sulphur
10 Cambridge - planet / moon
11 Leonidas - lion
12 Constantine - blue bubbles
13 Goddard - rocket ship
14 Laughlin - spikes
15 Lovelock - bird
16 Verne - submarine
17 Beefy Miracle - beefy
18 Spherical Cow - spherical cow
19 Schrödinger's Cat - cat
20 Heisenbug - something resembling this http://luckydusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Heisenberg-blog-01-01.jpg

Yeah, I agree. I'd like to see the design with figurines, how much it is going to clutter it.
Btw. we should have final design/t-shirt color by the end of the month (30. 6.), earlier would be better. It can take up to one month to order the desired t-shirts and print it for the vendor. Also many Flock planning team members are out later.

Is it even possible to do it on constraint space for all releases?
Or just bug? :)
work-in-progrses wip-18jun.png
work-in-progress... this is is getting pretty busy but... it's rough!
I think the figures of code names are too prominent compared to the clock rim. They should be smaller IMHO. The beefy miracle in the middle is also a bit confusing. Colleagues around me told me that from a distance it looks like the Imperial Eagle from the German coat of arms or a daemon with wings sitting on a ledge :)
None of them got it should resemble the Prague astronomical lock. Maybe we should add the characteristic "roof" above the windows with figures (maybe made of a pair of sausages? :) ). If we find out that the idea with window figures just doesn't work for us I think we can stick with the clock rim only. It looks very well by itself.
Oh man! Evil Beefy!!!
I have all the same concerns about the progress so far. What I'll do is ignore the figures/beefy angel / etc for now and focus just on the clock face below, and as time allows I'll try adding the roof and scaling down the figures / etc. I agree that the clockface design itself could work really well alone so it's a good fall back plan!

Another random experiment with clock + castle. I just realized after uploading that the entire thing looks like a tshirt by itself (lol). Just letting everyone know that isn't the intention - the stuff in the background of the clock is intended to be a castle/tower.
Throwing a suggestion as well - how about lining the bottom of the tshirt with such minimal looking castles/briges etc so it acts as a panorama of the city?

maybe getting closer with this one?
thinking of maybe having the outline of the clock tower or maybe just a cityscape somewhere to cap it off?
Awesome, I'd say we're close to the final design! I like the simple but very nice design, so adding more complexity with outline of the clock tower would be too much. Not saying no, maybe it would be even more amazing then :). For the flock label, I'd combine it with last years design somehow (not sure it's even possible) to make it work as series same as it was for FUDCon.
Is it intentional numbers are displaced?
With this design, I think we're back to light grey t-shirt, I'd say.
I agree, looks great. One thing I would suggest is that there's no reason the place name has to be in English equivalent. Why not use the local language, such as "Praha, Česká Republika"? (Jaroslav can correct this if it's wrong, I just used Google.)
Replying to [comment:29 pfrields]:
It would be "Praha, Česká republika" - a lot of strict rules about uppercase in Czech, I don't have a clue about ;-) - but with everything uppercase it's just "PRAHA, ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA". "AUGUST" is "SRPEN". It's a nice idea, especially thank you to the host country, although I'm not 100% convinced we should do it.
Czech version clock.3.cz.png
whoops i screwed up the numbers - my mouse accidentally dragged them - i can re-center them, hehe

I like the design, but as originally stated, it needs to be a single color so we can afford to make them.

We are able to produce multi-color t-shirts for a very nice price, from the vendor we know. If we will go with B&C EXACT 150, it means 2.37 euros for color one. With heather grey (or similar), we will need three colors and it's 0.80 euro (+27 euro pre-processing). Otherwise it would be a bit more expensive with 4 colors. White would be super cheap - 1.97 euro + 0.80 euro = 2.77 euro (+27 euro) - for 200 pcs, less than 3 euros (one side). What's the budget allocated for t-shirts?
At those prices, we're fine. I retract that restriction. :)

I just attached a bunch of stuff. Here's a rundown:
I've got quotes from the vendor:
4-color print, A4 size: €.74/unit price[[BR]] 3-color print, A4 size: €.62/unit price[[BR]]
The small logo on the back is, however, €.44 to print.
They say that ash and sports grey are also motley like heather grey, not monolitic colors. Ash is just lighter and sports grey darker.
The t-shirt proposed by the vendor is http://www.reklamnytextil.sk/index.cfm?module=Catalog&page=Product&ProductID=90436
They asked if we want t-shirts with weight of 150g or 190g (more quality ones). I asked them to give the price difference, waiting.

4 color print, even on the flecked t-shirt will look better and as price difference is 0.12 euros, it's worth doing it. We don't need the back Fedora logo, it wasn't there last year neither due to budget constraints and we have Fedora logo on the front side.
