Hello,
We need a logo & fedora badge design for the Fedora Security Team(FST).
-> https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Security_Team
This is to be used for the team branding and recognizing the folks who contribute to the various FST activities.
Could someone from the fedora-design camp help us with it?
Thank you
could you please provide me a fedora panda high resolution image. I can try for it.

Hello Ashutosh,

I think you need to ask on #fedora-design on irc.freenode.net or write to design-team's mailing list.

Hope it helps. Thank you.
Hey pjp -
We don't normally do fedora badges artwork here - you need to file a ticket on the fedora badges system for the badge to be created and the artwork happens over there. Do you have a ticket over there yet?
We can do the logo design here though. Do you have any ideas on how you want the logo to look or do you want us to use the standard Fedora team logo template?
Hello Duffy,
Replying to [comment:3 duffy]:
Oh, I see. I have opened a ticket there now -> https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-badges/ticket/373. Thank you for the pointer.
Ummn, now that I think of it, here are few examples that are close to what I've in mind.
-> http://thelogocompany.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/defensor-security-logo.jpg
-> http://www.teamsecurity.net/
Lock with the Drupal logo in it -> http://www.drupaldriven.com/content/forewarned-forearmed-avoid-4-drupal-security-problems
These are just examples. Idea is to have something more distinctive, than regular templates. Red Hat's shadow man is also a good example.
Thank you. :)

Hi, any comments or suggestions?
Hello Prima,
Replying to [comment:6 jurankdankkal]:
Thanks so much for working on this. I really appreciate it. To me, it looks quite generic; More like a password prompt/dialog of a screensaver. It does not hint about the Fedora security team OR its mission/work/purpose/objective/place etc. in Fedora.
I'll forward this link to the security-team list and request for more comments there. Hope that is okay.
Thank you so much for working on this. :)
Can you give a more explanation about the logo?
I'm collaborating with jurankadankkal on this.
Our current progress: [[Image(http://micahdenn.com/images/projects/fedora/fst_logo.000.png)]] Finding it difficult to get the silhouette of the shield or lock not to look tacky. I like the direction this is going in but we're both concerned it might not convey the feeling of security well enough yet.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Hello mciahdenn,
Thank you so much for working on this. I don't clearly see where it is heading. Maybe saying 'Fedora Security Team' might be better, instead of just 'Security Team'? Because for a third person the 'F for Fedora' may not be obvious. Other than that, I guess it's little early to comment any more about it.
Thanks so much for working on this. I appreciate it.
pjp please hold your horses, micas artwork looks nice but it is not compatible to our logo usage guidelines so for that we can use it.
We as Design Team suggest working on Yogis idea with the lock furthermore, he has done already some iterations, with our help, of it and will add them soon.

Thats the new update with help from mizmo and gnokii.
I apologies for the misunderstanding. mizmo has clarified the logo usage guidelines for me.

Feedback from the post in comment 16 -
"The idea looks neat, imo needs just minor improvements.
"The logo still looks a little bit too much like a shovel, I would make the lock less round at the bottom and center and enlarge the top loop. It would be nice to use a catchier font too, but the current one is pleasing enough as it is.
Simo."
Looks like just some minor tweaks to the graphic, can you try these changes jurankdankkal? (i think the font is okay and we should leave it the same for consistency with other teams.)
Just a note that this ticket is still active, and Yogi is going to work on it this weekend. He's been working on other more time sensitive tickets in the meanwhile.
Replying to [comment:19 duffy]:
Yep, okay. Thanks so much for an update.
Thank you.
I know it's a bit late in the process, but I was thinking about adding some ideas here.
Maybe it would be interesting to work on a concept that is considered secure "from the ground up", or that is widely recognized as having security by design instead of as an aferthought. I'm trying to be more creative than suggesting a fort or castle and failing, but maybe that is a general direction worth pursuing.
A lock, or a shield, for example, are objects that are used after the fact to protect something that is valuable and/or fragile. So using a lock or a shield, in a way, hints at security being added afterwards, and not built-in to the design of the thing.
We likely want to express that the Fedora Security Team works to design security into the OS, with protection mechanisms enabled widely and deeply throughout the system, instead of adding it afterwards.
Or maybe this is a bunch of nonsense, as I actually like the lock idea. :-) The lock itself is actually engineered to withstand attacks, so if we think about the concept of the lock itself, it has security built into its design. But does that then apply to Fedora as a whole? I guess this is the point I was trying to make above.
Hi thanks for working on this!
For the lock/shield thing, I like the general idea of it, but it does look a lot more like shovel (though yes, often we are digging our selves out of security holes...).
Something that maybe incorporates a more industrial style lock, something like a secure vault:
http://www.powerhouselms.com.au/files/image/security.jpg
Or a more destinct shield shape:
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=85016251
Would help?
Hi Yogi, any updates for this one?
attachment security-team2.png
attachment security-team3.png
Hi Yogi, I think the latest two versions (security-team2 and security-team3) are both problematic in that their logo usage violates the guidelines.
I think you were very close with https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/367/fedora-security-team-2.png - I would make the suggested changes by simo and consider this done:
Can you make these changes? Also, can you please upload your SVG?
Okay sure Mo, I'm still in India after FUDCon, going back tonight, I'll update asap.
attachment fedora-security-team-3.png
attachment fedora-security-team.svg
Hi,
I just update the logo and provide the svg file. :)
I think I'd go with the 'fedora-security-team.svg' over 'fedora-security-team-3.png'. In the later, the 'SECURITY TEAM' wording appears to scream louder than the logo/image. IWO, the FST logo/image & 'SECURITY TEAM' wording does not appear proportionate/coherent with each-other. One option could be to replace 'SECURITY TEAM' wording with 'FST' at the bottom of the shield. (just a thought)
This is my reading, I'll run both these options over FST list for more feedback/opinions.
Thank you so much! :)
Scrolling up '#367/security-team2.png' logo looks much better than 'fedora-security-team.svg'. I'm not sure how it violates the guidelines though. Again IMO, just 'FST' at the bottom of the logo would be better.
@Mo: would it be possible to improvise 'security-team2.png' logo to adhere to the guidelines? (just checking)
I'm a +1 for fedora-security-team-3.png:
[[Image(https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/raw-attachment/ticket/367/fedora-security-team-3.png)]]
I really like security-team2.png with fedora-security-team-3.png a distant second. Fedora-security-team-3 might look better with the word placement and font size for security-team2.png.
Still if there is a way to make the image from security-team2.png compliant that would be my vote.
Hi Yogi, The edits you made to the mark are great. It seems from the feedback the type treatment needs just a bit of tweaking. Can you do 3 alternate versions of this one:
Try them like this:
Version 1: - scale down the text size relative to the logo mark
Version 2: - scale down the text size relative to the logo mark and make it two lines instead of one (Security Team)
Version 3: - Scale up the logo mark, scale down the text size, and center the text under the mark (two lines is fine)
I think one of these should work well based on the feedback.
attachment fedora-security-v2.png
Hi Mo, I just update the logo based on suggestion, sorry for late reply, I've a bad connection a few weeks ago.
pjp - thoughts on the latest version?
Hello Duffy, jurankdankkal
IMO, the last one, with 'SECURITY TEAM' at the bottom, is good. Nonetheless, the font size of 'SECURITY TEAM' still seems larger. Could we remove the word 'TEAM' at the bottom, leaving just the 'Security' part? (just a thought)
Sorry about the delay in responding here, I was traveling and couldn't see it in time. I'll run these latest designs through the FST list for more feedback.
To be honest, I like all three. The color choices are easy on the eyes and the design is clean.
The one with the text underneath would be good for areas where we just need a small logo, but the one with the text on the right (all in a single line) would be great for a page banner at the top of a page.
All three look pretty good to me. Favorite is the third, but would like to see the word text smaller so that it more closely aligns with the sides of the image.
The second one with the two lines of text to the side is also nice, but would actually like to see the text a little larger, maybe so that the S aligns with the flat top of the shield.
Please don't take my opinion on this as any more important than any other random drive-by commenter, but I feel like the stretched justification of T E A M in that variant draws a lot of attention to that word, away from SECURITY or the logo.
Hey Yogi, do you want to make one more pass on this or should i open it up? I'd suggest the third version in comment 36, but just center the TEAM text with normal kerning.

yogi's latest iteration (oct 2015) fedora-security-team.2.png
Er, sorry, this is the correct one. How do you feel about this logo design from Yogi?
just sent pjp an email asking for feedback in today's design ticket triage
Hello Yogi,
Replying to [comment:41 duffy]:
It looks good. I'm not trying to pick on anything, but 'Security Team' wording looks bigger in proportion to the logo above. I asked my wife to look at the image while she was at distance from the monitor, first thing she read was 'Security Team'. For a third person, it's not readily obvious to see it as 'Fedora Security Team'. I can imagine we put this logo on baseball caps or on t-shirts and FST members wearing it at a conference, first thing anyone would see/read is 'Security Team'.
Would it be possible to move the wording 'Security Team' inside the lock under the Fedora 'F'? And say it as 'Fedora Security Team'? (just thinking aloud)
Thank you so much Yogi! :)
Hi PJP,
I can move the wording inside the lock. But actually it depends how this logo works, based on Iconic/Symbolic, wordmark, or combination mark?
Maybe if someone just see a yellow M with red background, they will know its McD, it'll works also in here if someone just see the lock logo with fedora logo inside without "security team" people will know it's Fedora Security Team?
Replying to [comment:44 jurankdankkal]:
True. I think just the image without 'Security Team' wording is better. OR if we must, maybe "FST" string inside the lock under the Fedora 'F' would be good. Could we please have a sample image of how it would look? (for better idea)
I love the look of the lock and I'm totally okay with keeping the logo to just that -- no text.
I like the look of the lock. I'm also fine with the text, but again would prefer to see it scaled down to be in line with the sides of the lock. So instead of having the front and end of security wider than the lock image, have the edges of the word in-line with the lock sides. Helps emphasize the the Fedora part but still provide the clear security team part.
Wow, I really like this. I also like the text placement of [comment:35]. I think having options would be good depending on the applications.
I like the lock/shovel/shield of comment 41.
Would it be easier to write "SEC TEAM" in one line, instead of "SECURITY TEAM" in two lines? Would it be a problem to have the smaller version?

Hi guys,
New update [[Image(https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/367/fst.png)]]
Mo, is it possible to use others font?
Replying to [comment:50 jurankdankkal]:
Excellent! I like 2'nd in the first row, one with the 'FST' string inside the lock.
Thank you so much Yogi for doing so many iterations and versions! I really appreciate it.
My favorite is the bottom right one in that grid with my second choice being the bottom left.
Nice work, thanks!
So, from a Fedora brand and design perspective, I really think this is the strongest design:
I understand the concern about this not being interpreted as the "Fedora Security Team" but I would like to ask in what context is the logo going to be used that the context of the team being within Fedora isn't going to already be obvious?
Our standard design for Fedora team logos / group logos is here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Fedora_Sub-Logos:_Standard_uses_of_the_Fedora_Logo_with_other_elements
That standard includes just the Fedora logo mark, no "Fedora" word anywhere, and the name of the team. Outside of the context of the Fedora project it might not make any sense, but the team logos are generally used within the project and the context is clear, which is why we don't use the Fedora word marks in team/group logo variants.
So are there specific contexts external to the Fedora project that you anticipate using this logo where you think the lack of a Fedora wordmark is going to be problematic / confusing? Because I think the answer to that should guide the final selection.
I may have missed it, but I don't see anything in the bottom right design in comment 50 that runs afoul of the standard design page you linked to. It's just more about bringing to focus of fedora to the forefront as we may be attending generic conferences/events that are Security community general and not fedora or even Linux specific. On first glance don't want Security Team confusing people with what we may/may not be associated with at the conference.

True, within Fedora context the Fedora logo is well known, so there is little room for misinterpretation. But... * For information security, there are heterogeneous groups and communities all over the world; And more often than not, participants there come from various other communities. In such a setup, it is imperative to be unambiguous and state our identity('Fedora') clearly. * Second, we also participate in various school/university outreach events and FADs, wherein again participants come from diverse backgrounds and aren't always aware of Fedora(logo). * The word 'Security' is also associated with infrastructure or premises security industry. Wherein private companies provide services to secure buildings/ATMs/offices/shops etc. Their names and logo too includes wording like 'Security Team'.
As stated earlier, I can imagine we displaying FST logo on t-shirts/caps/stickers etc. But when we go out wearing such swag, we are not always at a Fedora event wherein people know how to read above logo. In fact, more often we are surrounded by people who don't. So the first thing they'd notice and read in the above logo is 'Security Team', which invokes usual questions-cum-mockery 'Security Team?','What security team?', 'Which security team?', 'What do you secure?' etc. Instead IMO, if we clearly state 'Fedora Security Team OR FST', it would lead to better questions like 'What is Fedora?' OR 'What is FST?' etc.
Could we please have a version with 'Fedora Security Team' text written in small font inside the lock(like FST, possibly curved along the bottom [http://www.epcc.edu/IT/InformationSecurity/PublishingImages/InfoSecColorSmall.jpg Ex.])? To see how that would look? The text outside the lock looks much bigger than the logo/lock image.

Another suggestion is to have 'Fedora' string at the top of the Fedora logo inside the lock and 'Security Team' text at the bottom of the logo inside the lock. Both curved(if possible) along the top and the bottom respectively. Hi Guys, Please check this and let me know about your Feedback: [[Image(https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/367/Fedora%20Security%20team.jpg)]]
Hello Yudara,
This seems like a fresh start(Did Prima Yogi give up on this task?). Not sure if these designs adhere to the Fedora guidelines.
I think the earlier logo designs were well received, but for minor modifications. It'll help to improvise upon them, rather than starting afresh. Would it be possible to incorporate earlier feedback in that logo design?
Hi Guys,
I'm still the owner of this ticket and just waiting from others feedback.
@pjp For curved text along the logo, I think its not suitable with the current logo, and also looks oldschool.
@Yudara I think your design is too generic, for the lock and also you can't modify the fedora logo. and please read this https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_triage_design_team_tickets before doing someone's ticket :)
Replying to [comment:60 jurankdankkal]:

Well curved text was a suggestion. Idea was to have text inside the lock near to the Fedora 'F'. Because as said above(#comment:56), the 'Security Team' text outside the lock looks more prominent than the image, which is likely to be misread/misinterpreted. Having text inside the lock image also make the logo more cohesive and self contained IMO.

@jurankdankkal, cool! I think the spacing around "TEAM" is pretty tight, though I like the bigger Fedora logo. Perhaps try moving the bottom of the lock graphic down a little bit to give the text some space.
@jurankdankkal, any updates here?
I'm opening this ticket back up since @jurankdankkal hasn't responded for 8 weeks - Yogi thank you for your sustained work on this task, we're very close to finished here and you've done the bulk of the work. We're eager to close this one out since it's been open so long.
This ticket is now open for another designer to quickly finish off.
Hey @pjp, I did a couple minor tweaks her and there, will be waiting for your comment if it looks good =)
