#380 Custom logo for the Fedora Bootstrap project homepage
Closed: Fixed Opened by jcapik.

  • Deadline

Not any, but sonner = better

  • Size requirements in pixels (if applicable)

Resizable vector format (SVG) would be nice
and the aspect ratio is up to you. Look at
the URL below and decide. If there are any
size constraints for embedded letters, then
we're not against your recommendations and
can modify the layout.

  • If this is a logo or icon for an application, what application is this for?

Logo for project homepage currently located here:
https://jcapik.fedorapeople.org/fedora-bootstrap/

The webpage currently contains an unauthorized logo
that we want to replace with authorized logo made
by the design team.

The current logo theme is "Fedora self-replication"
and we'd like to keep the theme (but it doesn't
necessarily need to be painting ... it could be
cell cloning or anything funny while still well understandable)

Background transparency is welcome (we might decide
to invert the webpage colors in the future)

Ideas of the painting and the cells seemed a bit abstract and difficult to understand for me so I tried to stick to the self replication but much more simplified.

What do you think? Is this to far from what you wanted?

On a side note, I would ''highly'' suggest that you please never use a crazy tiling texture for the background of your site :)

Hello Micah.

Thanks for quick response!

I apologize for being unclear. With self-replication I didn't mean doing many identical copies of the original. The important thing here is that we're able to produce even one piece of the whole distribution and doing it completely from scratch using Fedora as builder. It doesn't even have to be the same version and the result can differ from the parent. That's why I mentioned painting or cell cloning. I wanted to avoid a feeling of factory produced clones. After reading the logo guidelines I understand we're limited by constraints (empty space near the logo and colors) and maybe we could drop the fedora symbol completely and replace it with something generic that represents Linux/distribution/Fedora and something that wouldn't limit us in doing adjustments because of trademarks. I was also thinking that we could be less conservative and give it more funny elements. And we don't need to be scared of abstraction that much. I probably emphasized the 'simplicity' too much. I was looking at your artwork in ticket 362 (https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/362) and must say I love the very first logo and also the character version at the bottom.

Anyway, I tested the logo on the homepage and it got a professional look.

I'm happy you mentioned that. It also needs to be replaced as the shiny effect is against guidelines and making it lighter so that it doesn't distract readers is also not allowed. Maybe you could help us to find a different solution for the background.

I hope I didn't discourage you and that we'll find the right solution together. Do you have any instant messenger or IRC? Would be better to discuss that online.

Thanks a lot,
Jaromir.

I think if Jaromir calls it Fedora From Scratch a mix of Fedora logo with that of LFS would be the thing, so everybody who knows LFS would know what it is. Even it breaks our guidlines at this point it would be acceptable.

And if it get not accepted we could do a puzzle design in the 4 Fedora colors, a puzzle represents the idea behind "bootstrap" in the best way I think

Sorry been AFK all week.

I love your idea of using LFS logo gnokii, I will work on it this weekend.

Jaromir my Nick is "M1C4HTRON13" on Freenode if you still need to ping me.

Hi Micah.

I have no luck. Still see you offline. Anyway, The puzzle design mentioned by gnokii might be interesting depending on the final form. The puzzle needs a completely new face as the original LFS logo looks pretty outdated. So, if you also like the idea, I'm curious what you can "squeeze" out of that :]

Thanks,
Jaromir.

Struggeling to make this work, any more ideas gnokii?

Hi Micah.

We'd like to keep the name "Fedora Bootstrap". The project got that name 4 years ago and we don't plan to change that.
I had a discussion with Ian Weller about the guidelines and he explained it isn't allowed to do ANY kind of modifications to the trademarked fedora logo. Even removing the TM symbol is not allowed.
The guidelines say the logo requires a clean area around ... "minimum 1/2 of the X-height around". It isn't allowed to modify inner or outer shapes, aspect ratio and colors. It isn't allowed to skew or distort the logo in any way. That's why I wanted to drop it completely and replace with something that allows all the above operations.

Another idea might be a picture of a blue boot with bootstrap and the fedora logo could be placed in the 4th free corner of the boot's 'L' shape.

With and without eyes. Yes I drew a boot with eyes. Career highlight? ;)

Thanks a lot! I like the final design and closing this ticket. Will re-open if I need more artwork for sub-pages in the future.

Jaromir.
