@duffy @riecatnor Hey! Hope you all are doing good and excited for the coming Flock! 😁
I would like to help out with designs for Flock.
I started brainstorming for the Flock'19 logo and came up with some ideas.

• looking at previous Flock logos, I started with the famous/historic places. Included the Hungarian Parliament.
• I also tried to incorporate some fun elements of Hungary like their traditional dresses with embroidery.

I will be happy to work on the iterations based on feedback and the need. Excited to be working on this, please do let me know your inputs!

Hey @tanvi this looks like a great start! A few things:

  • If you haven't already I would check in with @bex as I assume he is the event owner and should be involved in approving the design!
  • It looks like the "flock" logotype has been stretched horizontally, do you have a clean version of the logo file?
  • We don't change the color of the "flock" logotype so you have to use the original color rather than color it for the event - there's a flock blue color (same as Fedora Blue in our logo guidelines doc) or a flock white color, either is OK to use.
  • I think it might be worth just dropping the "Hungary" and just using "Budapest" - Budapest is a large enough, well-known enough city the country doesn't need to be specified. That way, the "Budapest" text can be larger and more of a focus in the design - i'd bump up the font size!
  • the flag element seems a bit unbalanced, i wonder if it would make sense to drop it? I'm not sure. there's something about the general composition that needs iteration - I think if you could enlarge the flock, maybe drop the figures or have them be smaller, and center the flock more, you wouldn't need the flag element or could move it elsewhere? (do you see what I mean about the composition?) Right now the main element is the parliament but the top of the visual hierarchy should be the "flock" text.

I am liking where this is going, however, I encourage us to consider two things:

  1. The left figure appears to have a rifle over their shoulder because of placement in the image. I therefore support Mo's suggest that we move or drop the figures.

  2. I'd like to see some feedback from Hungarians to ensure we are accurately representing their city. A post to the flock list is a good place to start. Also, post the link in the Telegram/IRC for feedback.

  3. It'd be nice if we could make this logo also work for a t-shirt.

@tanvi any updates?

@duffy @bex Hey! Thank you for the feedbacks! They are very useful :D
I was travelling this week, will upload the new iteration with changes by the end of this week! :)
Sorry for the delay :/

@duffy @bex Here are some of the changes I made :)

  • I removed the figures altogether. They didn't seem to fit with the overall composition.
  • Removed the flag element. Instead added the River Danube. Thought it would be a nice
element to reflect the location :D
  • I changed the Flock logo. Is this alright?

Let me know if there are more changes! Happy to help :D

@tanvi this is looking great! Just a few nits:

  • the flock logo is still squished. I just emailed you the official flock logo svg so you have a copy that has the correct aspect ratio. I think the color changes you made to it are ok.

  • i don't think the thin maroon outline on the 'budapest' text works... i'd ditch it or play with it a bit more, maybe make it a thicker outline behind a white copy of the text, or make it a drop shadow. or drop it completely and darken the water overall to give better contrast.

  • I'm not sure the dates are necessary

I like where this is going. Can we think about what this looks like moved to a t-shirt printed with two colors as well?

@duffy @bex Hey!
I changed the logo and added slight shadows to the two towers.
Also dropped the dates, darkened the water a bit and added drop shadow on the Budapest text.
Let me know what you think about it :D

Also, can you tell me about the basic guidelines for the t-shirt design? Background color, number of colors we could use, the text that goes on with it?
I'll work on it accordingly :D

I like the design, but am not even an amateur designer, so I look to others for any technical feedback.

RE: T-shirts. We have not yet selected a vendor, however we will be printing in two colors, to accommodate proper printing of our logo. We'd need to add text along the lines of the date. We definitely want Fedora to feature on the shirt, not just Flock as the Fedora branding has much more recognition value.

The background (t-shirt color) is the designer's choice. If we choose a common one and recognize that we cannot guarantee a CMYK/RGB match, we should be fine. People have tended to prefer colors over white.

I am not a t-shirt designer either so I hope those in the design team who ahve done it can provide you with more advice. I also encourage you to check the specs for a few site as they tend to be similar in overall concept, even if they have different file format or bleed requirements. The shirt will almost certainly be printed in either Hungary or a surrounding country (CZ, SK, PL).

hey @duffy! waiting for your feedback! any updates? :)

You @duffy !

Is there a link to existing branding elements /styleguides etc. so I can submit designs?

I can't find anything anywhere...

@tanvi hey sorry i missed this one. the updated design looks fantastic, i would go with it.

for 2-color, you basically get just 2 colors + the background color of the shirt. You could probably do just about anything with the 2 colors being black and white and having the t-shirt almost any color. Note you cannot use shades of grey, it can only be two colors.

I would suggest having a Fedora logo on the front, maybe smaller and chest centered or around the 'pocket' area, and then doing a large flock design on the back. the allowed max margins are something that varies by vendor so for the full area you have to work with on the back, i can't tell you, but usually it's somewhere between 10 - 13 inches tall and 8-10 inches wide in my experience with US vendors.

can you convert the current logo design to just black and white on a colored background?

@bigtimmyc can you give me more context? do you mean with this ticket, or fedora generally? if you mean fedora generally please email me at duffy@redhat.com or message the design team at design-team@lists.fedoraproject.org!

@duffy @bex Hey there! Hope you guys had a nice weekend :D

I worked on the T-shirt design. Let me know what you guys think about it!

@tanvi that looks great to me, will leave it to @bex to decide if it's the direction he likes. do note the back is 1-color and the front 3-color (the fedora logo requires 3 colors if the tshirt background isn't one of the blues or white) but 3-color front / 1-color back should be about the same pricing as 2-color front / 2-color back.

I'm not bex, but I love the design!

I also love this (and missed the email about this). What is our next step here?

@bex the next step is to finalize this for print. do you have a vendor identified? we can format this to their spec, or do what we do generically and produce a CMYK PDF for both the front and back.

@tanvi can you do the print prep once we figure out the specs?

@duffy @tanvi I am getting print specs for the shirts.

I've opened a badge design ticket here: https://pagure.io/design/issue/652 - can we use this same art for that? This is same style badge we've done for a few years.

@duffy @tanvi the printer would like, "vector based pdf/eps/ai in demanded real dimensions and with vectorized fonts would be great. The printed colors might be defined by Pantone. If not, we will use definition from last Fedora order, as attached. " I also need the pantone or other color for the shirt.

The colors they have for the logo on file are, "White, 7461C and 7693 C"

@bex we need the "demanded real dimensions" - different vendors usually have a different max screen size. in the US typically it's 11" x 13".

@duffy I had a feeling that we would need them to tell us how big. I requested it of them at the same time I posted that comment.

@duffy @tanvi the recommendation is 28 cm width

@duffy @bex Hey there! I'm uploading the pdfs and svgs for the artwork here.
I kept the Front and Back T-shirt dimensions as 28cm width and 22cm height. Let me know if they are alright.

I'm not sure about the placing of the Fedora logo on the front of the t-shirt. I think I would need help with that.
I referred to the last year's tshirt ticket for the sleeve dimensions, and kept it as 7cm width x 2.13cm height.

For the t-shirt color, I think 194 C, 216 C , 208 C are the closest to what we have as background along with Flock logo colors of White, 7461C and 7693 C (as Bex mentioned).

Do let me know if there are more changes! Happy to help :D

Thank you @tanvi ... I've sent the printer the files and shirt color suggestions. I'll let you know what happens.

@tanvi it looks like we need to make some t-shirt color choices:

It seems we can get the straight and fitted shirts in Purple LED or Burgandy (possibly fitted only in burgandy). The tall shirts are not available in colors so we will have to use black.

https://www.stanleystella.com/en-gb/creator-sttu755

I'd like your feedback. i need to make a decision on Monday. In the absence of feedback, I am going to go with:

Straight and Fitted: Purple LED or Burgandy, in that order - same color for both shirts. Only different colors if no other choice.
Tall: Black

Hey @bex!
I tried putting different colors on the mockups, and found 7421 C or 188 C to be appropriate.
If we are able to get these colors for ALL the sizes, it'd be great!

OR else we can go ahead with black (for Tall shirts) :D

Also, I'd really like @duffy, @mleonova or someone else to cross check the designs + format, as I'm doing this for the first time!

@tanvi the printer confirmed the files are right.

I can't order arbitrary color shirts, I have to use one from the list. The options there are all named, not numbered.

Please let me know the name and I will do my best. I do need several choices as we have to be able to get teh shirt on time and sometimes colors are not made for all types.

@bex I'm okay with whatever you decide based on logistics.
As per my suggestions, we can go with Burgandy and Black (for tall).

Thank you for making sure we have t-shirts this time. We really appreciate it :D

Hi @tanvi,

There's a few issues with the files:
- The PDF files are indeed CMYK, but they are using the wrong color values. E.g., the FRONT PDF file for Fedora blue has 80/38/4/0 but Fedora Blue is 100/46/0/0; Fedora dark blue has 86/58/23.5/10 but it should be 100/57/0/38. It also looks like it was imported from Photoshop - PS isn't part of our supported or recommended workflow - where did you get the color palette values from?
- For the BACK, you have a text object in your SVG that hasn't been converted to paths, so it'll come out in the wrong font.
- For the BACK PDF, the file is blank - I mean I know it's a white graphic on a white background, but if I open it up in an editor there are no vectors, it's just a blank canvas.
- For the SLEEVE, the Fedora logo is corrupted in both the SVG and the PDF. You're missing the Fedora blue color so you don't have an 'f' just an infinity. And the blue color that is there is also the wrong values.

Since it seems time is somewhat urgent here I'm going to go ahead and correct the issues. It's tricky to do print prep and this is your first time @tanvi, so let's keep talking about that still and figure out what went wrong in this instance so you'll have the experience under your belt for the next project! Regardless this design is awesome and I am excited to see how these turn out!

@bex you can expect some updated files in the next hour-ish.

@duffy I'm eternally grateful for all the help as this is urgent!
I'll go through the points you mentioned and surely talk to you about what went wrong!
Thank you tonnes!

Scribus sources

  • Not for printer
  • Scribus 1.5.4. Will not work in Fedora packaged Scribus 1.4.6. I prefer 1.4.6 but there was something wrong with the SVGs that caused them to not import into 1.4.6 and I didn't have time to debug it.
